14/05 - Under 18`s Somerset Floodlit League
Tiverton Town 0 v 1 Radstock Town
Tivvy Under 18’s last night blew their chance to lift the Somerset Floodlight League trophy for the third consecutive time as they slumped to a disappointing one nil defeat to newly-crowned champions Radstock on Monday night at Ladysmead, the first home league defeat since the clubs formation.
Coming into the game the visitors knew nothing but a win would do, whereas the Yellows could afford to draw to clinch the championship, and it was Radstock who came out of the traps the better, forcing Alex Bowring into a decent save from a free-kick just outside the box in the opening five minutes. The Yellows eased their way into the game with both Paul Wyatt & Tom Beddows (who formed a new strike partnership for the first time this season) were unlucky not to connect with headers after great crosses into the box by George Rogers. Further half-chances were carved out by either side before half-time, but the deadlock didn’t really look like being broken as the scores remained level after the first 45.
Tivvy came out for the second period looking a lot brighter and had the bulk of the possession, but still failed to create that golden opening for Wyatt or Beddows. However, on the hour mark the visitors, on one of their rare raids in the half, capitalised on some slack defending that allowed Radstock’s forward to ghost in between a couple of Tivvy defenders and lift the ball over the helpless Bowring. This single lapse had cost the home side dear, and was slightly unfair on the defence who had been pretty solid throughout with Brendan O’Boyle once again commanding to cap a great individual season and Ross Szabo impressing at left back in place of the unfortunate Richard Jones, who dropped to bench. The goal seemed to spur the Yellows on as they moved on up through the gears to get the much needed goal to climb back to the top of the league. Luke Passmore came on for Ben Cole, as the hosts switched to a more attacking style and the reward was nearly immediate as good work from Wyatt led to Beddows having an effort excellently cleared off the line when it looked to be a certain goal. The same striker then found himself on the end of a ball into the box but failed to gain any power in his header. The last ten minutes saw the final Tivvy push, with the home team in total dominance and the breakthrough seemed to come in the final minute of added time. After a midfield battle, the ball got squeezed through to Passmore who was through on goal, but as the keeper approached the substitute midfielder he tried to round the keeper but got brought down and claimed for a penalty. When the refs whistle sounded Tivvy thought they had been given the golden opportunity from the spot, when in actual fact he had blew up for diving and got awarded a yellow card for his efforts, sparking scenes fuelled with pure frustration.
The full-time whistle blew leaving the lads feeling disappointed and aggrieved that all their efforts this season had been in vein with just a runners-up medal to show for what has been a decent league campaign considering injuries and availabilities to key players at key times. But with the core of the squad being able to continue next season we hope to bring the trophy back to Devon much sooner rather than later.
Many thanks must be given to all the players and parents, staff and supporters for their commitment shown throughout the season. Also to Chris Davey for all the exceptional & hard work he's done behind the scenes trying to organise all the fixtures and much more, whilst Colin Nation who runs the terrific website mustn't go without a mention either and last of all to Fidler, dont know what we'd have done without him, Thank You, Notty

Tiverton Town 2 v 0 Bishop Sutton
Just seven days after visiting Bishops Sutton and excellently winning two nil, Tivvy Under 18's produced the same result, against the same team in the reverse fixture. Despite Freddy Kingdom carrying a knock and Tom Beddows being available, the same starting eleven began the game that played in last weeks match. Conditions were not ideal, especially during the first half as the rain came down heavily and remained on the surface on the hard ground, and it seemed that neither team were really taking the game to their opponents, however Tivvy probably carved out the best chance when Ben Cole mis-hit his shot whilst in a good scoring opportunity. After twenty minutes Kingdom had to leave the field of play to his injury causing him more grief, which led to introduction of the classy Tom Beddows in the middle of the park to partner Stevie Goss. This led to the Yellows becoming slightly more dominant in possession than their visitors, but still not being able to break the deadlock. Sutton then came close with a shot that tested Yellows goalie Alex Bowring's concentration, in a game where the big man had little to do. Left back Richard Jones also suffered an injury that forced him off the field, with Ross Szabo coming in impressively at full back.
After the break Tivvy came out a lot more positively and the opening fifteen minutes saw the Yellows keep Bishops Sutton in their own half constantly, with a goal looking more of a case of when, rather than if. The ever-lively Paul Wyatt missed a good chance from a corner, snatching at his shot, but the promising forward made amends when he was released by a long ball over the top of the Sutton defence, the striker lifted the ball over the ball calmly over the oncoming goalkeeper and the ball just snuck into the corner of the net to give Wyatt his 11th of the season and Tivvy a deserved advantage. The hosts were playing well, and moments later the lead was doubled as Beddows found the visiting defence asleep and was able to stroll through on goal without being challenged and finish well. With game practically won the game petered out to give Tivvy a workman-like victory that now sets up a mouth-watering game on Monday night against second-place Radstock at Ladysmead. Radstock know they must gain the maximum three points to clinch the title, from the Yellows' grasp, although at the ground where Tivvy Under 18's have never lost a league game in their history, Tivvy know their in the driving seat and will be looking for big performances all over the pitch to collect the trophy at the end of the ninety minutes.

Bishop Sutton 0 v 2 Tiverton Town
Only one change to the first eleven was necessary after a run of three wins on the trot, and this was to bring in the highly-promising centre back Brendan O'Boyle at the back for the injured Joe Alcock. Despite the pitch being rock hard and bumpy, the evening was perfect for a game of football but through-out the majority of the first half there was only team willing to do and unfortunately that was the home side, Bishops Sutton. The lads knew they were in for a tough game after Sutton had gained some impressive results recently, including a win over leaders Radstock, and the hosts were soon piling on the pressure, in a twenty minute spell where Tivvy simply couldn't get out of their own half. However, it seems to be becoming the norm for the lads switch on after the opening twenty, and finally look competitive, with the scores still not being affected. Although the bulk of the play was still coming from the home side, playing down the slope, they never really tested keeper Alex Bowring to any great extent and were left to pay for this in the 35th minute. Mounting a rare attack into the Bishops Sutton half, good midfield work fed dangerous striker Paul Wyatt who ran at the hosts rear guard, the attackers directness led to two Sutton defenders getting in each others way and leaving Wyatt to gracefully round the keeper and tuck the ball home to give the Yellows a goal out of nothing. The Tivvy defence cope reasonably well against an attacking home side, however there were a couple of chances created by the hosts that may have easily tested Bowring more, but the oppositions forwards lacked composure in front of goal. So despite playing a significant part of the half vastly below par and uphill, Tivvy somehow found themselves going in one nil up at the break.
As the second half began it was evident the hosts were becoming frustrated with the way the game was going, which led to a largely scrappy and untidy second half, but Tivvy remained focused on playing the football and were beginning to knock the ball around better with the slope in their favour. The reward came on the hour mark when Wyatt chased down a seemingly harmless through ball and managed to catch the defence on their heels. The home side failed to clear their lines, which allowed the forward to use his strength to hold off a physical challenge from the centre back and finish excellently, powering the ball past the keeper, doubling the Yellows' advantage and taking Wyatt's tally to 10 for the season. Bishops Sutton didn't give up the fight just yet and were still looking a handful on the counter attack, but Tivvy were still carving out a couple of good opportunities. George Rogers had rasping left foot drive just sail over the crossbar and Cam Nott had a decent header well saved. Wyatt then missed a great chance to complete his hat-trick when he was brought down inside the area after some skill on the edge of the box. The big striker dusted himself and took the penalty himself, but lashed the ball against the outside of the post, much to the dismay of Freddy Kingdom who himself was looking to get on the scoresheet! A few long range attempts were fired in at the Tivvy goal, with one seeing Bowring save excellently at full stretch to his right to keep his clean sheet intact. Stevie Goss then missed the last chance of the game for the Yellows after yet more superb work from the outstanding man of the match Wyatt on the right.
The two goal victory was a brilliant win in the quest to regaining the title, and now leaves the Yellows at the top of the table, two points clear of Radstock in second place with the two sides having to meet at Ladysmead on the 14th of May in what will probably be a title decider/winner takes all affair!

Tiverton Town 4 v 3 Bristol Manor Farm
In a game that was more suited to the fans, than the players and management, for pure entertainment reasons, the Young Yellows edged a seven goal thriller against a strong Bristol Manor Farm side at Ladysmead on Tuesday night.
The exact same eleven were picked to start that a couple of weeks ago had won the Devon Youth Cup 4-1 over Plymstock, however after witnessing the first 15 minutes you’d wonder if the lads had ever spoken to each before! With Tivvy looking lethargic, and the visitors coming out of the traps brightly, it was near domination for Manor Farm in the opening exchanges and the home side were punished for their slack start as in the tenth minute the Bristol side deservedly took the lead from a curling 20 yard free-kick that found its way right into the bottom corner of Bowring’s net. BMF didn’t let up there, and just two minutes later they doubled their advantage as the Tivvy backline couldn’t clear their lines and were slow to get out from a corner, when a cross from the left found a unmarked visiting player on hand to powerfully head the ball home. Thankfully this kicked the home side into gear, and the Yellows were starting to retain possession and create chances. The first good chance fell to Cam Nott after Richard Jones had a shot palmed away, however Nott couldn’t head home from 15 yards. Despite this Tivvy’s next chance led to a goal that gave them some way back into the game, outstanding work from Paul Wyatt down the right flank, led to the striker cutting the ball back to right midfielder Ben Cole, who beat one man before firing the ball into bottom corner for a great finish that left the keeper with little chance. This lifted the home side immensely, and they started to realise that although it wasn’t pretty, the long ball over the top seemed to catch Manor Farm out every time. The equalising second goal for Tivvy came in the 25th minute when a long ball forward found Cole, whose first touch was to superbly flick the ball over the top for Nott to race on to, who made no mistake when left one-on-one with the keeper cooly giving the keeper 'the eyes' and stroking the ball home. With the balance of the game now dramatically changed and Tivvy looking dangerous going forward, the brilliant comeback was complete just five minutes later. A high ball was played into the BMF box, and Luke Bryant managed to head the ball into the path of the lively Nott, who did well to hold off a defender and lash the ball into the top corner from 10 yards for his second of match and Tivvy's third. Salt was then rubbed into Manor Farms wounds five minutes from half-time as the explosive Wyatt made it four, after latching on to another long ball over the top to finish clinically.
The Young Yellows didn't come out too badly in the early stages of the second half, and a couple of half chances were created with both Cole and Nott coming close to further goals, but as Wyatt came off as a precautionary measure with his ankle still bugging him, Tivvy seemed to lose their attacking impetuous. This led to increased pressure from the visiting side through-out the second period, but Joe Alcock marshalled his troops well to sniff out any opposing raids, whilst Luke Passmore looked sharp when coming on as a substitute. However, in the 75th minute Manor Farm got a 'freak goal' when keeper Bowring seemed to fumble a soft header back to him, to allow the away forward to tuck away an easy goal and also give the visitors hope. However, the nets remained untouched in the latter stages and Tivvy gained a valuable three points that could help no-end in their quest to regain the league title. Next up is a trip to Bishops Sutton for what will be a even more important and tougher game on Thursday evening.

Plymstock United 1 v 4 Tiverton Town

The night started badly for us, a lorry had ploughed through the central reservation and collided with on coming cars resulting in motorway being shut both ways diverting southbound traffic to Honiton and onto Exeter that way, the subsequent delay which included the ref and his friends meant a 7.45 ko. The game started at a very hectic pace as you would expect with neither side getting there foot on the ball for any periods, the Plymstock side( whose supporters were getting behind every forward movement, fair play to them) had a couple of chances early doors the best bringing a great save from Tivvy`s Bowring managing to deflect the ball onto a post and away. Tivvy gradually started to settle down and after about 25mins we took the lead, a long free kick by Rogers looked as if it was over hit, hit the crossbar looped up into the air and dropped to Steve Goss to tap into an empty net. The rest of the first half carried on in the same vein both sides looking dangerous on the attack and perhaps a bit dodgy at back. HT 1.0 The under 18s came out second half with a positive approach and approx 55mins on the clock Rogers (who had his best game in Tivvy`s colours) threaded through a long ball to Paul Wyatt (who looks as if he's fully recovered from a ankle injury) calmly slid the ball past the advancing keeper. This fired the Plymstock team into action and after a couple of chances at either end they made it 2.1(Deservedly) after sloppy marking in the Tivvy defence. A change in defence was called for so Brendan O'Boyle (who got there just before halftime) replacing Sam Strong at centre back and Cam Nott had to come off with blisters so Alex Faux( who's scoring for fun at the moment at his club) replaced him upfront, not long after this change was made Tivvy got there third from a set piece this time( where we did look dangerous all night) a great ball in again from Rogers was not cleared and O'Boyle was on hand to finish from close range (His first for the club). Tivvy were well on top now, another move started by the very impressive Kingdom (who worked tirelessly all night ) fed the ball wide to Wyatt (whose jinking runs mesmerised the Plymstock defenders all evening) who with the keeper to beat unselfishly laid the ball back to Faux to finish with aplomb and his first for the club also . 4.1 to the Tivvy boys a great team performance by everyone , 110% effort put in as it has been all season , thanks to all the Devon officials at HQ and all the supporters at the game . Four games left in the league need to win them all see you all next game home to B.M.Farm 1st may .

Tiverton Town 4 v 0 Paulton Rovers
The under 18's got their stuttering campaign back on track last night with a fine four nil victory over a young Paulton side. The Yellows welcomed back talisman Paul Wyatt to the starting line up after he's missed out on over a months worth of action through an ankle injury, and he was partnered up front with hard-working Alex Faux. This meant that Bradley Riggs dropped back into his more accustomed role in midfield, whilst Cam Nott and Ben Cole dropped to the bench, apart from this it was the same side who were unlucky to lose to Radstock last week.
The game started with Tivvy coming out of the traps at a ferocious pace, and dominating possession in the opening 15 minutes. In which time, Wyatt and defender O'Boyle were unlucky to see headers cleared off the line, whilst Shane Tucker missed a decent one-on-one chance. After Tivvy's rapid opening, the visitors started to get into the game themselves, and they gave the Tivvy backline a scare on a couple of occasions but never forced 'keeper Bowring into a serious save. The deadlock was broken after 35 minutes when some good one touch play in the middle of the park, involving Kingdom, Goss and Faux released Wyatt for a clear run in on goal, and the returning striker made no mistake despite the efforts of the Paulton defender on the line. The half then petered out, with the bulk of the play being battled out in the middle of the park.
The second half began by again seeing Tivvy fall asleep, which seems to be becoming a regular occurrence, when a well worked free-kick saw the visiting attacker fire the ball into Bowring's net, however Paulton's celebrations were soon ended after seeing the linesman had his flag up for offside. This seemed to wake the Tivvy side up, with Riggs and Wyatt looking lively and the dependable central midfield partnership of Goss and Kingdom excelling against their opponents. The 60th minute saw Wyatt have two attempts saved, and whilst thinking about going for the third try, the pacey striker unselfishly squared the ball to the oncoming Goss to tuck away for his first league goal of the season. Tivvy hit cruise control and didn't have to wait too long for the third goal as Shane Tucker also opened up his goals account with a neat finish following up a rebound. With Tivvy slightly easing off, Paulton showed some resistance, which made for another midfield battle with no real chances being created. This was until the 85th minute when a long ball over the top was latched on to none other than Wyatt to bag his second and Tivvy's forth of the game with a clinical finish.
With top side Radstock only managing a draw against Weston this victory for the Yellows put the title back in the reach of Tivvy. If both sides were to win all their remaining games we would be looking at goal difference to separate the teams.

Radstock 1 v 0 Tiverton Town
Despite coming in to this game on the back of two disappointing draws and having another under-strength squad to choose from, confidence and morale seemed very high within the dressing room and during the warm-up coming into this vital top of the table clash away to Radstock Town. And this positively spilt over into the Yellows play during the first half, on a difficult pitch that was described as 'harder than concrete'!
Through-out the first 45 Tivvy dominated proceedings, and played the kind of football that they know they are capable of but has so far been lacking during the campaign. The way the ball was being knocked about was a joy to watch, and Radstock had very little response to the excellent football being displayed. However, chances came and went with Cam Nott the guilty party in missing two similar decent chances early on. Just when it seemed like the hosts heads were dropping, though, they too managed to carve out a couple of isolated chances which could have easily seen the deadlock broken, so Radstock's direct attacking intent was definitely there to see. Tivvy kept playing the high quality of football, though, with 'midfielder-come-striker' Bradley Riggs looking very impressive in his new role and league debutant Shane Tucker using the ball superbly down the left wing. This continued high-tempo attacking play saw right midfielder Ben Cole go close a couple of times and centre back Brendan O'Boyle having a shot from a corner cleared off the line. But despite playing the best half of football the season has seen so far the scores somehow remained level.
The second period was a lot more patchy from Tivvy's point of view and this was beginning to show as the Radstock midfield were starting to have a bit more time on the ball than the first half. However, in spells the Yellows strung together yet more organised moves but without creating a glaring chance. With keeper Alex Bowring yet to make a proper save, the ball seemed to be spending a lot of time in the middle in the second half with neither side really threatening to score. But in the 75th minute a rare moment of uncertainty from Tivvy defender O'Boyle allowed the ball to bounce beyond him and into the path of the gambling striker, the home attacker made no mistake from 15 yards smashing the ball past Bowring and sparking somewhat enthusiastic yet embarrassing celebrations. The substitute of Ben Cole for Joe Alcock meant that Tivvy went to a 3-4-3 formation for the closing exchanges, which nearly paid off as Steve Goss fired agonisingly over from the edge of the area after a neat pull back from Nott.
The final whistle blew with Tivvy being left frustrated with the one nil defeat after playing some of the best football so far this season and knowing their efforts hadn't counted for any valuable points. This loss now leaves the Yellows with an up hill struggle to regain the league title now, with either Mangotsfield or Radstock looking the likely destination for the trophy. However there's still a long way to go yet and in this league anyone can seem to be able to beat anyone, whilst Tivvy should be boosted by the return of a few key players for their next game at home to Paulton on Thursday the 12th and the vital league run-in.

Bristol Manor Farm 1 v 1 Tiverton Town
With a whole host of absentees due to injuries and unavailability, an under-strength Yellows side, which was made up of only 12 players, expected to have to work hard for the victory away to Bristol Manor Farm, however the play began very brightly for the visitors. In fact, the opening 15 minutes was amongst some of the best stuff that Tivvy had played all season, with debutant Bradley Riggs showing some neat touches and plenty of tenacity in the middle. Yet the dominance of possession couldn't be transferred in to any clear cut chances, whilst Manor Farm were struggling to cope. Gradually throughout the half though the home side got into the game, but without looking likely to break the deadlock. The first goal of the game came in the 35th when a free kick was whipped in from the right hand side, which found birthday boy Brendan O'Boyle inside the box, however his effort hit the crossbar and the rebound cannoned off an oppositions defender and into the path of Ross Szabo who placed the ball into the top corner from all of 5 yards. So despite being the better side, with far superior possession, the Yellows only found themselves one goal up at the break without creating many clear cut chances.
The second half saw a near complete collapse of Tivvy's play, as the Yellows struggled to get out of their own half and clear their lines. With Manor Farm strongly on the front foot the inevitable happened in the 60th minute. A free kick from the right hand side was drilled low into the Tivvy box, and with the ball making it's way through a sea of bodies, Joe Alcock was the unfortunate player to see the ball hit his shin at the back post and roll into the Tivvy net to bring Manor Farm level. The continuous pressure continued from the home side, but the back three of O'Boyle, Alcock and Sam Strong did well to limit the home side to a few long range efforts. One of these efforts nearly saw BMF take the lead with a wicked dipping volley, but keeper Bowring was equal to it to produce a good tip over the bar. The final 10 minutes finally saw Tivvy take the game to Manor Farm and apply some pressure whilst attacking up the slope, Sam Strong was unlucky not to score when his close range shot was somehow kept out on the line by a defender, whilst the big Tivvy defender also hit a rasping drive that stung the keepers hands. In the end it was another case of what could have been, but at the same time the Yellows were lucky to escape Bristol without getting beaten, as Tivvy lacked the additional quality to get the job done convincingly and comfortably.
Five points from three games now leaves the title race wide open with a number of teams in the running for the glory, but a win is now highly desirable next Tuesday away to Radstock, who are currently occupying third place.

Tiverton Town 3 v 3 Weston Super Mare
Boosted by the return of last seasons top goalscorer, Tom Beddows, and the recent victory over Brislington on Tuesday night, Tivvy had every reason to go into the home game against Weston brimming with confidence. Especially seen as though the Yellows had already turned the visitors over 3-1 in the reverse fixture earlier in the season. However this confidence was soon a forgotten thing as Weston took a fifth minute lead with a free header finding the top corner of the net from a corner. Once again a defensive lapse cost Tivvy dearly. Despite this early set back though, the home side rallied and gradually got back into the game with some decent periods of possession, but Weston still looked dangerous and likely to cause the Tivvy back line problems playing a neat passing game (something very rarely found in the Somerset League!). But the young Yellows got an equaliser in the 20th minute with one of the best goals so far this season; Goss, in the middle, found Rogers on the wing who's first touch was to give the ball to Alex Faux, who played the perfect through ball to "new boy" Beddows to finish excellently in the bottom corner. The one-touch, direct and inventive football ripped the Weston defence apart, and has been an aspect in Tivvy's attacking play that has been lacking in previous stages of the season. With the wind in their sails, Tivvy were playing well and soon crept into the lead, as another Faux through ball played in Beddows who was challenged inside the box, and the ref pointed to the spot giving a dubious penalty. Beddows picked himself up to tuck the spot kick away nicely, to gain his and Tivvy's second of the night. A few more half chances were created by either side, but the half time whistle blew with Tivvy leading 2-1.
Again the Yellows struggled to get out the traps quickly in the second half, and they were punished as just after a minute of play, tricky play from the Weston forward sold Tivvy centre back Joe Alcock a cheap dummy, who then went on to beat Alex Bowring at his near post. Things looked like they might get a lot worse as the second half progressed when Luke Passmore brought down a visiting attacker in the box for another penalty. But keeper Bowring guessed the right way to produce a brilliant save from the kick. This event spurred the lads on and Faux was unlucky to see his shot go wide after racing clear. Going into the last 15 minutes, a brave triple substitution was made by the Tivvy management team which saw an attacking 4-3-3 formation introduced. The effects were immediate as good work down the right hand side found Beddows in the box, who turned his man delightfully and placed his shot into the corner of the net to complete a much deserved, a excellent hat-trick. With this it seemed as though the Yellows thought the three points were wrapped up, but there was still time for more drama... Just two minutes from time Weston's left winger eased past the non-existant challenges of the Tivvy defenders, who then had time to look up and pick out an unmarked team mate on the penalty spot, who drilled the ball past Bowring and into the net to spark Weston celebrations. The game wasn't finished there though as Beddows nearly got his fourth with a curling free kick which agonisingly hit the post and out to safety.
So Tivvy had to settle for the point, which now makes the league very interesting reading as everyone seems to be beating each other. A special mention must go to the Weston side who came down to Ladysmead with the intent to play football rather than spark violence, and are a credit to their club. Another positive has to be the goals of Tom Beddows, who could well be the much needed goalscoring answer to Tivvy's play.
Team: Bowring, Strong (Jones), Bryant, O'Boyle, Alcock, Goss, Kingdom, Rogers (Szabo), Passmore (Boardman), Faux, Beddows
20/03 - Under 18`s Somerset Floodlit League
Tiverton Town 1 v 0 Brislington
The young Yellows got back to winning ways on Tuesday night against a physical Brislington side. However, it was by no means vintage Tivvy football again, as the lads had to dig deep to scrape a one nil victory. Once more Tivvy were lacking attacking options with Paul Wyatt and Scott Boardman out injured, as well as Tom Beddows playing for Cullompton. This left Cam Nott and league debutant Alex Faux to lead the line, with the latter particularly catching the eye with a hard-working and efficient performance in his first league game.
The game was played out with very little clear cut chances and, the majority of the time, uninspiring football, however it always seemed as though Tivvy would be able to cope with what the Bristol side threw at them. The first half was particularly scrappy, yet there were one or two chances being created by either side. Ben Cole spurned two reasonable opportunities for the Yellows, whilst at the other end 'keeper Bowring had to watch a couple of shots fly past his posts.
The second half saw Tivvy gradually start to knock the ball about a bit better and keep possession more effectively, although once more there were still no glaring chances being created. The back four of Bryant, O'Boyle, Strong and Jones dealt with the Brislington raids adequately, whilst middle men Goss and Kingdom managed to keep their opposing players quiet. The better retention of the ball meant that the Yellows were able to feed the wide men, Rogers and Cole, more purposefully and the deadlock was broken after 75 minutes. The non-stop running and persistence of Faux led to the Brislington defence making a miss-placed pass, Faux gathered the ball around 30 metres from goal and played a delightful through ball to strike partner Cam Nott who beat the visiting keeper to the ball to neatly slot home into the side netting. With challenges now flying in, the young Yellows kept their cool well and remained concentrated throughout. Although there was one scare towards the end, when a high cross from Brislington's useful winger found a visiting attacker unmarked on the penalty spot, the striker placed a header right into the corner of the goal, however, Bowring's fingertips managed to direct the ball away from goal to produce a fine save.
So Tivvy held out for a vital three points that puts them back in the driving seat, but the performance may need to raised for the same outcome to occur against Weston on Thursday night at Ladysmead.
14/03 - Under 18`s Somerset Floodlit League
Mangotsfield 6 v 2 Tiverton Town
Tivvy suffered their first league defeat of the season to the hands of a good attacking Mangotsfield team last night, in their first league since the 9th of November and only their 5th league game of the season. With absentees such as Paul Wyatt (playing for the first team), Tom Beddows (playing for Cully), Ben Cole, George Rogers (both unavailable) and Cam Nott, struggling with a dead leg, an under-strength Yellows team knew they were in for a tough away game, but a very winnable one nonetheless.
With the lack of attacking options, Tivvy began by playing a new 4-5-1 formation which obviously took a bit of time to adjust to as the Mango's attack seemed to be penetrating the Tivvy defence quite freely, although the home side never really created any clear cut chances. However, on the twenty mark the whole occasion was soured by an unfortunate and ugly injury to the big Mangotsfield central defender. After going up for a header, he managed to land on the hard and bobbly surface on the side of his right foot, putting his ankle completely out of joint. Our best wishes go to the lad for a speedy recovery!
Due to the need for an ambulance, both sides went back into the changing rooms for 15 minutes whilst the necessary action could be taken and the game was to continue. Tivvy started this period a lot brighter, and began to put some pressure on a largely untested Mango's back line. The first chance came when Steve Goss lashed in a 25 yard free kick on goal, only to see the keeper just get fingertips on the ball to tip it onto the post, however the referee bemusedly gave a goal kick, and this was the first in a catalogue of minor errors throughout the officials game. Yet Tivvy did get the opening goal of the game from a corner, which after it evaded everyone inside the box, it found it's way to Luke Bryant who was unmarked at the back with an acute angle, but managed to gracefully lob the ball with the outside of his boot over the crowd of players and goalkeeper into the side netting for the defenders first goal for the club. Mangotsfield fought back though and were soon down the other end, forcing Alex Bowring into good double save to keep the Yellows' lead intact at half time.
After half time the good defending unfortunately went out of the window and as the new half was just two minutes old Mangotsfield were awarded a penalty after keeper Bowring tried to claim a bouncing ball in the area but instead dragged the home sides forward down. The spot kick was tucked away excellently into the top corner, leaving Bowring no chance to make amends. This seemed to signal that Tivvy had pressed the self-destruct button as just a few minutes later Mango's edged ahead as one of their forwards was allowed to run down Tivvy's left hand side and fire in a shot which cannoned back off the post, straight to the feet of their other forward for an easy tap in. Yet more disaster was to come though, as straight from the restart the home sides lightning quick striker waltzed past the near non-existent Tivvy defence to fire past Bowring at his near post. The frantic five minutes were complete when almost straight after that effort, Luke Passmore was up in the Mango's box for Tivvy who calmly finished with a shot that fizzed under the keeper, bringing the scores to 3-2. The game then quietened down for ten minutes, until another sublime finish from a Mangotsfield player into the top corner from 25 yards gave Bowring no chance to restore the home sides two goal cushion. A very similar goal was conceded soon after, as the score was beginning to get a bit embarrassing. But despite the extremely high quality of finishing, most of the goals could have been prevented after silly defence mistakes at the wrong times in the build up. Mango's then added another another with an exquisite lob over Bowring to compound Tivvy to their heaviest ever league defeat. However, credit where credit's due the young Yellows didn't completely stop and come the last 5 minutes were knocking the ball about nicely, and had a penalty appeal remarkably rejected when substitute Nott had the goal at his mercy after getting played in by the hard-working Scott Boardman only to have legs taken away from him by a reckless challenge.
However, there is a lot to improve on before Weston visit Ladysmead next Thursday.
11/03 - Under 18`s Devon County Cup Semi Final
Tiverton Town 0 v 0 AFC Southway
Tivvy win on Penalties
After exactly a months worth of postponements (and endless phone calls and texts!) the Under 18's Devon Cup Semi Final finally took place, between Tivvy and, Plymouth-based, AFC Southway. The game, originally scheduled to be away for the Yellows, was played at Witheridge FC due to numerous water loggings at Southway's ground and at Ladysmead, and it provided a decent flat surface for the lads to battle out a highly entertaining yet goalless 120 minutes of football.
Tivvy lined up with a 3-5-2 wing back formation, with Sam Strong getting a chance at centre back from the start, but the Yellows struggled to get into any rhythm in what was a frantic opening 20 minutes of the game. However, after a few expected nerves were blown away the lads started to find their feet and began to play some attractive attacking football, forcing Southway on the back foot through-out the 1st half. However, Tivvy failed to make the chances they were carving out count with Fred Kingdom missing a good chance in a one-on-one situation by shooting past the post and Paul Wyatt missing a few similar opportunities. Yet the pressure was beginning to tell and the solid Southway defence were starting to leave gaps that the Yellows were benefiting from, but Tivvy lacked added composure and inventiveness in front of goal. Amidst all of this pressure though the Tivvy back-line were tested more than enough as AFC Southway looked to counter attack at every given opportunity, but defenders Brendan O'Boyle, Sam Strong and Joe Alcock along with goalkeeper Alex Bowring dealt with raids ably to limit the visitors to half chances.
The second half saw Tivvy's defence tested a lot more as Southway began to play some neat football and making it difficult for the lads to get out of their own half, almost creating a reverse of the first half with the Yellows looking to counter attack. Despite the away side's pressure Bowring was never really forced to make a save, with the closest attempt whistling past the keepers post from close range as the Southway forward seemed certain to put the ball in the back of the net after a brilliant cross from the right hand side. Tivvy were still very competitive all over the park with Steve Goss having a good game in the middle and Wyatt looking increasingly lively up front, but the forward seemed to be getting a little fustrated as his finishing let him down a couple of times in good positions. A substitute on the 65 minute mark meant Tivvy switched from 3-5-2 to a 4-4-2 formation when Luke Bryant came on for Richard Jones, which meant Rogers and Szabo could be used to a more attacking benefit. Once again more half chances were created with a couple of goal mouth scrambles at either end, but after 90 minutes the scores remained level.
Extra time was hard work for Tivvy lads as most had played the day before for Saturday clubs (or been out the night before!) but the work rate was still visible against a Southway side who wanted the win greatly, with striker Cam Nott still chasing down every ball up front and Kingdom typically working tirelessly to try to make something happen, but unfortunately it didn't and it was left to the lottery of a penalty shoot-out to decide the finalists.
The Southway lads must have thought they had one foot in the final when Kingdom lashed over his spot kick in a Jonny Wilkinson style and Wyatt scuffed Tivvy's second penalty for the keeper to easily smother, added to this Southway dispatched their first two spot kicks. However, Nott steadied the rocking ship by slotting the ball past the keepers grasp and into the bottom right hand corner, whilst the visitors missed their third after a Bowring save. Rogers then stepped up to thump the ball into the back of the net, but the Southway defender scored his pen leaving the scores at 3-2 to Southway as we entered the final round of kicks. O'Boyle confidently stepped up and duely shot elegently past the visiting after knowing that if he missed the Yellows would be out, so it was Southways for the taking however their player sent the ball rolling to Bowrings feet for an easy stop. This meant sudden death and Goss, who had endured a good game, scored for the Yellows meaning that the Southway player had to score, unfortunately the kick rebounded off the outside of the angle and away, sparking celebrations from the home team.
Please can I thank Witheridge FC for staging the game and the use of their facilities, and also the players and supporters of AFC Southway who made the trip as they were all a credit to their club. All the best of luck for the rest of the season lads!
28/01 - Under 18`s safely through to next round of League Cup
Tiverton Town 1 v 0 Sherborne Town
After Sundays very comfortable win at Plymouth this league cup match was a lot more like a normal Somerset floodlit match, a well organised Sherborne team set their stall out right from the outset allowing Tivvy no time or space anywhere on the park. This resulted in few chances at either end possibly the away team having the best clear cut chance 5 mins before halftime where Tivvy`s custodian Bowring making a great block with his feet. Much of the same second half until the Tivvy boys started to knock the ball around the way they can, Fred Kingdom instrumental in most things they did and eventually we got the breakthrough, Ben Cole starting a move and finishing well as he has done all season. Tivvy on top now Bryant and O'Boyle snuffing out any Sherborne raids between them, apart from one chance from a corner that never got cleared the resulting shot forced a great save from Bowring again. Nott and Boardman worked tirelessly up front (but Tivvy missing Paul Wyatt with a broken nose sustained at Plymouth on Sunday, get well soon Paul) lacked any cutting edge. A win is a win as they say and this was a good workout for some of the lads who haven't played together since the end of November. Next game is the semi-final of the Devon Cup at Elburton-villa against AFC-Southway (who beat Nicky Markers team Tamerside 2-1) on Sunday the 11th Feb any support will be gratefully received, this is followed by a league match at Bishops Sutton on the 15th away.
28/01 - Under 18`s through to Semi Finals of Devon County Cup
Staddiscombe Colts 0 v 8 Tiverton Town
The lads pulled off an 8-0 victory as they ventured into the unknown to visit Staddicombe Colts, of Plymouth, in the quarter finals of the Devon Cup. Considering this was our first game since the last round in November, we were pleased with the performance from the lads although the hosts rarely offered any threat to the final result.
A few missed half chances were forgotten about when George Rogers dispatched a penalty in the 10th minute, after a suspicious handball. The second came when Paul Wyatt played in Ross Szabo for a simple tap-in, when pretty much everyone was expecting an offside flag! We were then dealt a blow by losing striker Wyatt to a cut eye after challenging for a ball in the air, so on came Luke Passmore. The third goal came from Cam Nott after he sprung the suspect offside trap, and Passmore added a forth with a simple tap-in from 2 yards. The goal of the game came just before half-time when Nott laid the ball back to Rogers to plant the ball in the top corner with a vicious curling effort.
After half time the Yellows were guilty of missing chance after chance, but with result in no doubt this wasn't too significant. The sixth came from a Fred Kingdom penalty after Nott was pulled down inside the box, whilst Passmore finally got his second a few minutes later with a good finish. Steve Goss also got on the scoresheet to complete the rout with a close range header. Credit must also go to the defence who, despite having little to deal with, remained concentrated and focused throughout. There was also time for Sam Strong to miss a penalty after Nott was again brought down, the defender hit the outside of the post meaning the hair won't be gettin cut for another couple of weeks!
Team: Bowring, Alcock (O'Boyle), Strong, Goss, Jones, Rogers (Bryant), Kingdom, Cole, Szabo, Nott, Wyatt (Passmore)
19/11 - Under 18`s through to Quarter Finals of Devon County Cup
Tiverton Town 1 v 0 Elburton Villa
Playing in difficult conditions, both sides equipped themselves well in an hard-fought win for the Yellows. The 1st half was very evenly matched with both sides creating a few chances, which could have broken the deadlock. The lads had Tivvy goalie Alex Bowring to thank for the score remaining level as he pulled off a couple of fantastic saves, however at the other end Wyatt and Boardman both went close that on another day may well have gone in. But the scores remained level as the half-time whistle blew.
In the second half Tivvy dominated for large periods and the pressure paid off in the 60th minute when Wyatt smashed home a goal at the end of a goalmouth scramble. Further pressure resulted in a couple of half-chances being produced, with Nott having a header cleared off the line and substitute Rogers chipping the ball over in a one-on-one situation. Although despite this pressure there were a few scares late on for the lads to deal with, yet the final whistle blew with the score Tivvy1 Elburton Villa 0.
Team: Bowring, German, Jones, Passmore (Rogers), Alcock, White, Wyatt, Kingdom, Boardman (Cole), Faux (Nott), Strong
09/11 - Under 18`s win from a goal down
Weston Super Mare 1 v 3 Tiverton Town
After a bit of rollercoaster game the lads won three hard-earned points from Weston to lift us to the top of the league with a game in hand. Due to injuries, illness and a school drama project(!!!) changes had to be made from last weeks side, with Rory Williams, George Rogers and keeper Alex Bowring all missing out. In came Taunton-based goalkeeper Shaun Locke, with Cam Nott making his first league start up front.
As seems to be routine now, the game began in a frantic fashion with neither side willing to put a foot on the ball and play football. However, the longer the game went on, the more both sides started to get into a rhythm and a couple of half-chances were beginning to appear. The Yellows probably just edged the opening 30 minutes, and were unlucky not to see the ball in the back of the net after sustained periods of attacking pressure, however things still looked vulnerable at the back and Weston's first chance, and perhaps the best chance of the half, came in the 35 minute, a spell when Weston had the upper hand. It was a free-kick on the edge of the box, the effort curled dramatically and Locke did well to turn the ball onto the cross bar and away to safety. However, Weston's passage of good football paid off in the 40th minute when they took the lead after Locke let a seemingly harmless through ball slip through his grasp to leave the home side's striker with the easiest goal he'll score in his career!
Knowing that there was definitely a way back into the game, and after a few half-time words, Tivvy came out all guns blazing for the second period, and started knocking the ball about effectively to produce some attractive football. Pleasingly the defence of Bryant, Reckless, O'Boyle and Jones also looked a lot more comfortable, providing the platform for the rest of the lads to build on. However, things weren't always one-way traffic as Locke, in the Tivvy goal, needed to be alert on a couple of occasions to produce some smart saves. Yet at the hour mark the pressure was starting to become relentless and the goal was a case of 'sooner rather than later' in coming. It finally came in the 65th minute, when a neat one-two between Nott and Passmore created space for Nott to play an inch-perfect through ball to the increasingly lively Wyatt who got halted in his tracks by a slide tackle from one of the Super-Mare defenders. With the ref pointing to the spot, captain for the night Fred Kingdom, who was pulling all the strings in the middle of the park, stepped up to drill the ball into the back of the net and get the much deserved equaliser. Within the 75th minute, the comeback was complete as neat exchanges down Tivvy's left, involving Jones, Szabo and Wyatt resulted in the latter advancing into the box and firing an unstoppable shot to the keepers right, to cap off another quality performance from the exciting prospect. However the Yellows weren't finished there as in the 83rd minute the victory was sealed after a goal kick was won in the air by Goss which played in Nott perfectly, who coolly rounded the keeper to finish the game as a contest and get the goal his hard-work deserved. All credit to the Weston boys, who never gave up at any stage and added to a brilliant game.
Team: Locke, Jones (Strong), Bryant, Boardman (Passmore), Reckless, O'Boyle, Goss, Kingdom, Wyatt, Nott, Szabo (Cole) Unused: German, Alcock
01/11 - Under 18`s get a tough draw
Brislington 2 v 2 Tiverton Town
The under 18s were held to a 2-2 draw last night at Brislington ,after theIr good result against Exeter in the FA Cup we knew we were in for a tough game and tough was the right word. On a frosty evening the game started at a frantic pace, the home side having a few half chances before Wyatt was put away but as he rounded the keeper he knocked it a little too wide and couldn't convert, then in the 20th min the tall Brislington striker managed to find a bit of time and space in the tivvy box and crashed a shot into the bottom corner via the post for 1-0 . We started to find a better rhythm midway through the half and in the 30th min we got our deserved equaliser another whipped in ball from Rogers was missed by everyone at the near post but not Szabo at the back whose header found its way under the keeper dive and into the corner of the net . After the break it was all Tivvy creating some great chances and eventually our second goal came. A long ball into the box was missed by everyone except little Scott Boardman whose flick went in over the desperate leap from the keeper. We had plenty of chances to kill the game off at this point but a mixture of bad finishing and bad luck not to mention a penalty miss from Rogers . The game by this point was getting very scrappy and the officials were not helping matters at all. Some of the rulings made by the man in the middle were interesting to say the least, for instance , Paul Wyatt through on goal pulled back by a Brislington center back managed to break free minus his shirt sleeve only to get fly hacked by the other centre back for the pen denying a clear goal scoring opportunity twice in fact , what does the ref do, booked one of them, then had words with Wyatt for protesting . Then to make things worse they go up the other end and grab the equaliser after Bowring failed to hold a deflected shot and rebound going to the Bris striker to tap into the net, the game finished with us on top but not being able to get the winner. I would just like this chance to say well done to the lads involved last night, for when all the tackles were flying in they stayed composed and concentrated on the football which some of the Bris lads ought to do, as they were a good footballing side.
04/10 - Under 18`s play Devon County
Devon County 1 v 0 Tiverton Town
It was just the bare bones of the squad to choose from ,what with college games and Willand playing but it gave us the chance to give firing players a good workout and they definitely got that . All the lads gave there best against a Devon side that looked good in spells. Good performances from Alex Faux up front, Luke Bryant at wingback and Sam Strong at sweeper gave us some good alternatives for the future. Playing five at the back seemed to tighten things up a lot although the only Devon goal came from a long through ball. We also looked a bit outnumbered in midfield but apart from that we more than matched the county side which was encouraging. We conceded the only goal of the game midway through the first half after a spell of Devon pressure and two good saves from Bowring, the game was a little slower in the 2nd half as both sets of players tired especially ours, and the county boys probably had the best of the chances but Bloomfield (between the sticks 2nd half) handled it all well.
26/09 - Under 18`s crash out of FA YOUTH CUP
Exeter City 5 v 0 Tiverton Town
Well what can I say "a masterclass in football" the Exeter reporter wrote in the city web report and I cant disagree with him. In all positions on the park they bossed the game from the first minute to the last even with ten men. The Grecians scorers were local boy Dean Stamp with three (2 pens 20th,50th and great individual effort 83rd) Jake Wannell (a good move down there left resulting in a unchallenged header 33rd min) and finally the best goal of the lot a cracking volley from just outside the box in the 86th min from a very impressive Liam Sercombe after we had failed to clear a corner .Our boys were a bit down after the game which was to be expected. The city team performance is the standard we need to set ourselves for the future and hope we don't come across teams of there quality in our league. Congrats to the city boys and good luck in the next round and thanks to all supporters and parents that came last night, our next fixture is the Devon trial match at Ottery next wed 4th oct, cheers Notty.

14/09 - Under 18`s continue to win
Tiverton Town 4 v 1 Mangotsfield United

we were dealt a bad blow in the warm up as Mark Reckless (who was due to make his debut ) pulled up a reoccurring groin injury so it was off to the refs changing room to get the official line up adjusted hence the worried looking picture on the website. The game started badly for us as we struggled to come to terms with a decent attacking Mangotsfield side, our defence was all over the place trying to decide who marked who etc, after about 20 minutes Mangoes got the breakthrough they deserved, a free kick from there right flank was turned into the net by their no6 but we thought it was a tivvy player Anyway as the half went on we started to get into the game which made the half time rollicking a little bit quieter and second half we defended properly which gave a decent base to attack from and the rest is history. The equaliser came from a long ball into the mangoes box, the away keeper came and Scott Boardman nipped in front and flicked the ball into a empty net. We took the lead after about 60 minutes through a George Rogers tap in after a long ball into the box from skipper Williams. We had to wait a while for the nerve settling third after home keeper Bowring made a great close range save from the mangoes centre forward. From the resulting corner we broke away and Boardman got his second after a jinking run through the away defence round the keeper and in. The fourth a great finish from tireless striker Wyatt into the top corner after another great move down our left involving numerous tivvy players. The sponsors man of the match went to Scott Boardman. Again thanks to all the supporters and parents that watched and also a big thank you to 'THE SUITS' who are the new sponsors of our tracksuits . P S our original game next week against the Devon u18s never materialised so Dorchester Town will be our last opponents before the FA cup match at Exeter , K.O for the Dorchester game is wed 7.30 cheers Notty.

06/09/06 - Under 18`s
Paulton Rovers 2 v 3 Tiverton Town
The team was dealt a triple blow before a ball had even been kicked last night on their visit to Paulton. Firstly, Mark Reckless was involved in Newquay's FA Cup replay against St Blazey, Right back John Heveran was found to be two weeks too old for the league and therefore will be illegible for the season, and worst of all influential midfielder Ed Squires suffered a double break of his leg whilst playing for Okehampton last Saturday. Let's hope for a speedy recovery as he will be sorely missed.
The game started at a hectic pace with either side struggling to settle into a rhythm. After around 25 minutes, a through ball found Ben Cole who eluded a couple of challenges and bundled his way past the keeper for the simplest of finishes. We started to stamp our authority on the game from then on, and pressure paid off when Cole again scored. Jinking past two defenders on the edge of the box he unleashed an unstoppable thunderbolt into the corner of the net to score the best goal of the game. After a series of corners, Tivvy conceded direct from a corner in the last kick of the first half to lift Paulton's morale. The home side came out all guns blazing and got the equaliser after 55 minutes from their lively no 9. We gradually got back into the groove and were rewarded when talented Paul Wyatt scored with a great header from a Rogers cross in the 68th minute. A dubious penalty was giving to Paulton a couple of minutes later, however their no. 7 blazed it over the bar. The yellows hung on for a hard-fought three points, and could have got a couple more in the dying minutes. A good overall performance against a useful side, however same as the 1st team - we need to defend better.
Thanks to everyone that turned up, and see you all next Thursday for our first home game against last years runners up, Mangotsfield.
SQUAD: 1) Bowring 2) White (16. Bryant '72) 3) Williams 4) Goss 5) O'Boyle 6) Alcock 7) Kingdom 8) Rogers 9) Wyatt 10) Boardman 11) Cole (12. Szabo '72) Unused: 14) German 15) Nott 16) Jones
23/08/06 - Under 18`s Match Report from Plymouth Game
Tiverton Town 1 v 0 Plymouth Argyle
Tivvy's opponents were a mixture of 15 and 16yr olds from Argyle which were an even match for the two completely different sides we put out against them. Both Tivvy squads coped well with the fast tempo of the game and by the second half Argyle looked to be wilting a little. All twenty eight players that made it through the trials were involved in the game and as you can imagine there wasn't a lot of room in the changing rooms! Anyway back to the game and we started with two new lads on trial, keeper Alex Bowringer and striker Paul Wyatt both ex pilgrim players who were recommended to us by Stuart Gibson and both look great prospects. The first half was very competitive with both Wyatt and Nott going close for us, the second half was more open with chances being created at either end. The only goal came after 55mins with Tom Edworthy showing a clean pair of heels to skip away from the argyle defenders only to see the keeper make a great block with his legs. The loose ball fell to Scott Boardman who found the bottom corner of the swimming pool end net. All the lads did well which makes the job of selecting the final 16 to face Paulton in the first league game even more difficult for myself and fids. A big thanks to everyone who were able to come and support us and see how the team is progressing.
