Tiverton Town Under 14s 3 v Wellington Town - April 2010
Another superb display of football saw Tiverton take the 3 points against a Wellington side that struggled to match the Yellowson the day..
The opening moments saw the Tivvy crowd get excited at seeing George White run through the back line and looking sure to go one on one with the keeper after picking up a well threaded through ball from midfield, but unfortunately for White he was adjudged to have been offside. Wellington did have a half chance around about 5 minutes into the game which came to nothing and from thereon in the first half was mainly played in Wellington’s half of the pitch. With 9 minutes gone George White opened the scoring with a great solo effort that saw him take the ball from half-way inside the Wellington half and using his pace he simply sliced through the back line before slotting the ball across the keeper and into the back of the net. Tivvy continued to make chances and force errors from the Wellington defence and it was Max Bristow who came close next from a free kick some 35 yards out, which forced the Wellington keeper to expertley fingertip it over the bar for a corner. Moments later Tivvy should have extended the lead when Bristow was through again; he should have squared the ball to Alan Woodcock who would have had a clear cut chance but on this occasion Bristow made the wrong decision and fired straight at the keeper. Woodcock and White continued to work well up front causing the Wellington defence all sorts of problems with their strength and agility. White had another opportunity to extend the lead after forcing the play and doing all the hard work of getting past the defenders, he gently passed the ball to the goalkeeper after mis-hitting his strike. Clearly frustrated by this, White made amends moments later when provided the ball from the Tivvy midfield he again went on a strong run, brushing all challengers to one side, before unleashing a shot which sailed by the keeper to make it 2-0. The Yellows’ tails were now well and truly up and a superb piece of play upfront between Woodcock and White saw them knocking the ball to each other before White squared it across the area for Woodcock who slammed the ball goalwards forcing a great save from the Wellington keeper.
The second half started with Woodcock in the frame again after George Gardiner sent a long ball over the top, Woodcock managed to get it down to his feet on the edge of the area but didn’t quite have time to unleash a clean shot as the Wellington keeper rushed out to meet him. Moments later, more great battling from Woodcock and Zak Morgan forced another error in the Wellington defence when the keeper rushed out of his box and made a save with his hands. The ref showed the keeper a yellow card as Tivvy organsied the kick which was in a very dangerous area just outside the box. Woodcock stepped up to take the free kick which he sent in low and hard towards goal for Bristow to get the final touch on, making it 3-0. I think it would be fair to say, although Bristow claimed the goal, if he hadn’t have been in the position he was the ball would have hit the back of the net anyhow, as the keeper was beaten. Tivvy continued to dictate the game and a quick thinking move from Daniel Nation where he sent the ball out on the angle to Morgan who almost extended the lead further as he sailed by the defenders, but unfortunately couldn’t find the finish. Woodcock continued to impress with a run from midfield that much like White in the first half saw him run through unchallenged to strike a shot which unfortunately went straight to the arms of the keeper. With only minutes of the game remaining another sweet move saw Morgan run down the flank and square the ball to White who was inside the 6 yard box. If the shirt was available today White would have surely claimed it as somehow he managed to put the ball some distance wide of the goal with noone to beat and only 5 yards out. Thinking that was the end of it, Max Ansell had almost a carbon copy chance just before the final whistle. However, the score remained 3-0 to Tiverton.
Everyone would like to wish our old friend Darren Paul from the Wellington team a speedy recovery. Darren fell awkwardly during the match and put his arm out to stop his fall, this resulted in him fracturing his arm. Get well soon mate.
