Bishops Sutton 1 v 5 Tiverton Town U18s -Somerset Floodlit League – April  2010

Tivvy take the 3 points to spoil WSM’s unbeaten run in their final game of the season

A top of the table clash with two teams that are in form was always likely to be a great game to watch, and I don’t think any of the crowd went home disappointed.

From the outset Tiverton looked relaxed and full of confidence which was almost rewarded within the opening minute when the ball was sent long for Ryan Turner who met it on the edge of the box but couldn’t get the ball under control quick enough to get it on target. The opening 15 minutes saw Tivvy dominate the game and the pairing of Turner and David Hood up front were looking increasingly dangerous. In true footballing fashion though it was WSM who came close first with a long range shot that whistled over the crossbar, with the game going from end to end it was Hood who next came close after he picked the ball up from mid-field and ran through the WSM back line he lobbed the on-rushing keeper but the ball sailed over the bar for a goal kick. With 10 minutes or so of the furst half remaining the WSM forward unleashed a thunderous strike from range which had Robbie beaten, but lady luck was on his side as the ball bounced off the cross bar and over the stand. Tivvy had several more chances with both Hood and Turner coming close, but the first half finished 0 – 0

The second half started much as it had ended with Tivvy’s Turner and Hooch working well together up front, 10 minutes or so into the half WSM hit a purple patch and started to apply pressure on the Tivvy backline and the first of their attacks forced two tremendous saves from Robbie Powell, the first was a venomous strike that he parried out to the feet of the striker, who slammed the ball back goal-wards but must have been shocked to see Powell already on his feet to block the shot.

It was with just under an hour played that WSM took the lead, when the ball was fired in from a corner kick, but was not dealt with the WSM forward slotted it into the net through the crowded penalty area. 3 minutes later WSM extended the lead to 2 – 0 and it was looking like their season was going to finish with them being unbeaten .... Not so, tonight’s U18’s showed the passion and desire to win they have shown in the last few games, but was sadly missing in a couple of key games earlier in the season. With 72 minutes on the clock, it was Turner who at long last got the goal he deserved, with a run from just over the halfway line it went through the defenders to leave himself a tricky angle for a shot, but with a cool head it slotted it in across the keeper to make it 2 -1.

WSM continued to threaten, but the yellows were now in the ascendency, pushing forward with every opportunity and with 5 minutes of normal time remaining it was Oli Nott who got the equaliser with an absolute peach from some 25yds out. He struck the ball to perfection to fire it high into the corner of the net giving the keeper no chance, so 2 -2 and everybody thinking that was a good come back, it got even better, deep into time added on Oli Nott got the 3rd and his second goal of the game from short range making it 3 -2 to Tivvy.

A great team performance which has now given the team a great opportunity to secure second place in the league.

Goal Scorers: Ryan Turner, Oli Nott (2)
