WESTEXE RANGERS 2 V 5 TIVERTON TOWN
This was a top of the table clash between champions Tiverton Town away to newly promoted Westexe Rangers, who found themselves in second place with a game in hand after winning their first 5 games of the season. The only time these two teams met last season was when Rangers knocked Tivvy out of the league cup in the semi final at Newton Abbott 5-2.
Tivvy however, took control of this game from the start and immediately pegged Rangers back in their own half. Tivvy's passing build up play was fantastic and at times very patient as they looked to find the right pass to break through the determined and hard working Rangers defensive line.
Chances started to become closer as the half went on, resulting in Tivvy forcing a few corners which they failed to make the most of until the 17th minute of play when an inswinging corner from Harry Butler found the head of the Tivvy centre back Lucas White, climbing highest in the box to superbly knod home for a deserved 0-1 to away team.
Tivvy looked in control for the next few minutes, and had a good long range effort well saved by the Rangers keeper before Rangers themselves managed to carve a bit of play keeping them in the Tivvy half, and when Tivvy failed to clear the ball when they had the chance the Rangers striker flicked a nice pass over the backline for a supporting Rangers player to run in and fire across goal for 1-1.
Tivvy didn't really deserve to go in at half time stale mate, and captain Harry Butler made sure of this straight from the re-take with a powerful and direct drive down the left wing, forcing the defender into his own area and when close enough he fired a fiercesome shot low across the keeper for 1-2 to Tivvy only seconds before the half time whistle.
Tivvy again dominated play in the second half right from the start with chances to extend their lead going begging, Lucas White had another fine header hit the crossbar, Tyler Hawkins had a shot well saved and Ryan Morgan had a goal dis-allowed for offside. But Tivvy finally got their 3rd when Tyler Hawkins was left in space some distance from goal and showed why he shouln't be, when he thumped a cracking shot which come off the underside of the crossbar, bounced beyond the goal-line and span back into play to give Tivvy the 2 goal cushion.
However Rangers are renowed for their fighting spirit and soon after scored a goal to bring the gap back to 1, putting the game in a tense situation for the next 5 minutes or so.
Again though, this was a game where Tivvy were on top from the start and they weren't about to live in regret and spurred themselves onto victory with a further 2 goals to seel the game, The first coming from Harry Butler, lobbing the keeper and the second from Ryan Morgan opting for accuracy as opposed to power as he neatly curled the ball round the keeper from the edge of the box.
2-5 the final score, but more impressive then the score was the performance from the Tivvy lads, they were proffesional in their game right from the beginning of the warm up, right to the fianl whistle. A deserved win against strong opposition. Well done all.
