Tiverton Town 8 - 3 Odd Down

Floodlight League Cup 2nd round

The lads knew this could be a potential banana skin as the young Odd Down had a convincing 3 - 0 win in the previous round and were an unknown quantity. The Yellows set their stall out early and took the game to Odd Down passing the ball around well and looking dangerous right from the off.

Adam MacMartin came close within the open moments of the game when the ball came back to him from a deflection off a defender, the ball came to feet very quickly and MacMartin couldn't get the ball under control hitting it high over the bar. Tivvy continued to pile on the pressure and after a great build up in the middle of the field that saw Tyler Grigg knock the ball to Tom Tricker who in turn sent it out wide for the pacey Jake Searle, MacMartin was delivered a pin point cross from Searle which he slammed into the net making it 1 - 0.

The goal seemed to kick start Odd down into action and for the next 5 minutes or so they were pressing for the equaliser, after losing the ball in midfield they got caught cold as the ball was slid through before it was lofted high for Searle to get his head to and with the keeper rushing to meet him he dinked it over the keeper making it 2 - 0.

Odd Down continued in their efforts to get back into the game, but for much of it they were outplayed and forced into making mistakes at the back which would cost them dearly. With 35 minutes played Tivvy earnt a corner which was dispatched into the box by Richard Edworthy to be met by Liam Pike who rose like a salmon to make sure he was first to the ball, heading it past the keeper to make it 3 - 0. the continual pressure gave Edworthy the next chance when it hammered the ball at goal from some 10 yards out, it was only the bravery of the Odd Down defender on the line who took the full force of the shot that stopped the Yellows from going further ahead. MacMartin was clearly in no mood to take prisoners as he got his 2nd goal of the game in the 41st minute when he forced the ball in from range to make it 4 - 0 going into the half time interval.

The second half started without Steve Sutton, who was replaced up front by Lewis Moore making his debut for the Thursday night team and from the outset he was a menace for the Odd Down defence with his speed and strength. With 7 minutes of the second half played Pike scored with a carbon copy goal to his first half effort when Edworthy delivered the ball in from the corner for Pike to head home making it 5 - 0. Tyler Grigg was close to making it 6 - 0 when he was in on goal, but the shot was superbly stopped by the Odd down keeper. The 6th goal came on the 65th minute, Tivvy were awarded a free kick some 15 yds outside the area, Searle lofted the ball in for James Skinner to head in unchallenged.

As so often happens when a team gain such a lead, the lads appeared to go to sleep and allowed Odd Down to pretty much walk through the midfield and backline and score an easy tap in making it 6 - 1.

Tyler Grigg was replaced in the 75th minute by the second of the 3 Thursday night debutants Dan Nation who filled the left wing position whilst Edworthy slipped into midfield.

Tivvy forged another goal from more build up play that went from one side of the pitch to the other before the ball ended up with Searle near the edge of the box who fired the ball in low and hard to deservedly get his 2nd goal of the evening ( 7 - 1). With 10 minutes remaining the 3rd debutant Max Bristow replaced Tom Tricker in the middle of the park. The Yellows knew they had the game won, but 2 sloppy goals in the 81st and 84th minute bringing the scoreline to 7 - 3 gave them a bit of a wake up call and after the ball was sent into the Odd Down penalty box by Searle, Bristow managed to get a foot to the ball to put it into the net making it 8 - 3 to the Yellows with 88 minutes played, Bristow was unfortunate not to get a second when another great pass through from midfield saw him running in on goal to deliver a powerful strike that rebounded of the upright and back to the safety of the Odd down keeper.

Final score 8 - 3 to the Yellows, a very well earnt victory against a young, well organised team who never stopped playing football. The Odd Down lads and management were a credit to the league in their performance and demeanour and hopefully they will gel to make a great team for the rest of their season.

Tivvy goals Adam MacMartin (2), Jake Searle (2), Liam Pike (2), James Skinner, Max Bristow
