Under 18s - More News & Reports

Clyst Valley 2 - 3 Tiverton Town

Devon U18's League

On a blustery autumn day Tivvys young yellows travelled to Clyst valley.

Tivvy had a makeshift squad of 16s 17s and 18s.The game started with the usual sparing and probing with Clyst valley having the first shot on goal, an easy save for Dan Law. Tivvy slowly started to push forward with the front two of Ben Lyne and Adam Macmartin working hard and linking up well both having to work back to help the makeshift midfield cope.

Tivvy finally made the breakthrough with the midfield pair of James Youlden and Tyler Grigg , the latter pushing the ball out to Joel Letori who paased wide to Adam Macmartin who ran the final third of the pitch, around the back of the Clyst left back and cooly slotted the ball home to give Tivvy the lead. Straight from the kick off Clyst valley hit the Tivvy post, followed shortly by a goal line scramble confidently cleared by Haydn Banfield who passes the ball down the wing to Lewis Moore who passed to Jake Searl, Wallop Tivvy two nil.

At the start of the second half Tivvy appear to sit back which allows Clyst Valley to get back into the game, A mix up between the Tivvy defence and keeper finds Dan Law well off his line allowing the Clyst Valley striker to score in an open goal 2-1. Straight from the restart Clyst Valley go straight at Tiverton again and Dan Law is caught napping goal 2-2. Tivvy make some changes Haydn Banfield off Sam Baker on.

On 77 mins the hard working Ben Lyne comes off with Ryan Hancock coming on pushing Lewis up front, his first touch of the ball in the back of the net Tivvy 3-2. Straight from the restart Tivvy go at Clyst with the intention of more goals, Adam Macmartin having a great game linking up well with Jake Searle with the latter nearly getting another goal.

All in all a great team performance with the lads showing great character to get the win. A big thanks to the two under 16s who stepped in to help out and aquitted themselves extremely well, I think we will see more of them as the season goes on, two wins from two what more could we hope for.

Tivvy goals Adam Macmartin, Jake Searle,   Lewis Moore

Cirencester 3 - 1 Tiverton Town

FA Youth Cup – 2nd Round Qualifying Thurs 6th Oct 2011

The Yellows came up against a very well organised Cirencester Academy side on a blustery and cold night which saw both teams playing some good passing football, but on the night the Cirencester lads edged the game to go through ot the next round.

Bitton 1 - 2 Tiverton Town League Cup – 1st Round Thurs 26th Sept 2011

The Yellows continued with their impressive start to the season with another cup victory.

Tivvy started very positively working hard and with some great movement off the ball, the early moments saw Ben Friend and Adam MacMartin linking up well down the right with Steve Sutton causing all sorts of problems for the Bitton backline with his pace running at them. Against the early run of play it was Bitton who came close when a speculative long range shot was sent in but Jacob O'Callaghan got down and held the ball well before sending it back out for Tivvy to start the counter attack which came to nothing.

The game was ebbing and flowing and Bitton must have thought they had the lead around the 30 minute mark when a well worked piece of play saw Bitton earn a throw in which was headed goalwards beating O'Callaghan, but out of nowhere Liam Pike appeared to kick the ball off the goal line and keep the scores at 0 - 0.

Bitton continued to press the downhill advantage but with 41 minutes played they were caught out, Joel Letori sent the ball through a crowded midfield and it looked to be safe for Bitton as the centre back moved toward the ball, Sutton had other ideas as he raced towards goal and took the ball from the Bitton player who was totally outpaced and he continued his run in on goal taking the keeper on and slotting it past him to give Tivvy the lead.

Bitton continued to look dangerous but could not make any headway before the break. The second half started at a much higher tempo and within minutes Tivvy were unlucky not to extend their lead when Tom Tricker clipped the upright after receiving the ball from a Free kick just outside the Bitton box. Tivvy started to turn the screw and it was Letori who again made a great pass to the feet of Ben Friend who slammed the ball at goal from 25 yds out forcing a tremendous save from the Bitton keeper.

It was Sutton with his brace that extended the lead around the 55th minute when he burst forward from half way inside Bitton’s half, dancing around the backline before rifling the ball past the keeper 2 - 0. The next chance fell to Luke Turner who had a great game out on the left, he picked the ball up from the half way line taking on all comers before cutting inside and unleashing a powerful strike that once more forced a great stop from the keeper.

A change in formation saw Bitton change to 5 in midfield in an attempt to force themselves back into the game and it was stout defending by Tivvy that prevented them from gaining any headway.

It was a nervous last 2 minutes though as Bitton were awarded a free kick near the corner post, the lad whipped the cross in which somehow flew into the top corner making it 1 -2. Tivvy held strong though progressing to the 2nd round where they will meet Odd Down at Ladysmead on the 20th October.

Tiverton Town U18s 4 – 2 (aet) Wells City U18s

FA Youth Cup – 1st Round Qualifying Thurs 22nd Sept 2011

WOW!! what a game this was. In true FA Cup fashion it had everything and the game would have been a worthy final as both teams gave everything in their endeavours to progress to the next round.

The game started at a tremendous pace and although there were chances for both sides it was very evenly matched for the 1st 15 minutes. Tiverton had the first real opportunity to open the scoring when Ben Friend placed the ball at the back post from his corner kick, James Skinner made contact but slammed the ball high over the bar, Tiverton continued to pile the pressure on passing the ball around well and forcing the Wells back line into giving awaya cheap free kick. It was Friend again who stepped forward to take the kick which dipped over the wall, the keeper managed a save but fumbled the ball, Steve Sutton was on hand to react first but again the ball was sent skyward.

It was looking like the 1st half was going to finish 0 - 0 but on the 40th minute a mix up at the back for Tiverton gave Wells' Joe Morgan the chance to run in on goal and push the ball beyond the grasp of Dan Law, less than 2 minutes later Morgan must have thought all his Christmas's had come at once when another mix up saw him with the ball at his feet in the box and a well placed strike sent Wells into the break as 2 - 0 deserved leaders.

Part two of the epic started with Tivvy on the front foot trying to force the play, but within moments they almost came unstuck when Morgan was through on goal again, but law stood tall and made a great save, which I have no doubt, had it gone in the game would have been over.

Tivvy started to gain a bit more control and were spending much more time in the Wells half and creating chances, the breakthough came from anotherset piece with Adam Kana-Ah heading in from close range from a well deliverd corner kick.

Wells started to look a little nervous sitting back and allowing the Yellows to paly high up the pitch, Wells were still dangerous on the break but the Tivvy back line were not looking like making any more mistakes. The Tivvy pressure was constant, but it was looking like they were never going to get the bit of luck that by this time they deserved and the clock was ticking away, with less than 10 seconds of normal time to play Tiverton were awarded a penalty after a clumsy challenge in the box from one of the Wells defenders, Tom Tricker stepped up to take the pen, but with the enormous pressure on him to make the goal, he somehow managed to send the ball wide.... surely it was all over bar the shouting now .....

..... Not so - 2 minutes into time added on (due to O'Neills little prob!!) the Cirencester keeper rushed out to meet the Tivvy forward who was through on goal and he brought him done in the box, the referee had no hesitation in awarding a second penalty in as many minutes. Steve Sutton took the unenviable decision to step up and made no mistake in burying the ball into the back of the net making it 2-2 and forcing extra time.

The first period of extra time saw both sides attacking the game but there was no break through, the final quarter of the game was a different story and Tivvy finally turned the screw with 10 minutes remaining, it was Friend who put Tivvy in front with his pace and trickery affording him tme to get into the penalty area before firing home ot make it 3 -2 and put Tivvy in front for the 1st time in the game, a little under 5 minutes later Friend who had an exceptional game made the tie safe with a goal that was simply delightful to watch, running into the box from the right hand side he maanged to beat the keeper at the near post from an angle that simply ddi not look possible.

All the best to Wells for the rest of the season .

Tivvy will now meet Cirencester in the next round its an away fixture Thursday 22nd September 7.30PM kick off.
Goal Scorers: Ben Friend (2), Adam Kana-Ah, Steve Sutton

Tiverton Town U18s 4 – 1 Paulton Rovers U18s

FA Youth Cup – Preliminary Round Thurs 8th Sept 2011

It has traditionally been the first competitive game for the U18’s at the start of each season since I have been involved with the team and each year the Yellows have started slowly and nervously before building up a head of steam…. This game broke the mode, Tivvy came flying out of the blocks and if it were not for the upright and crossbar Paulton would have been two nil down in as many minutes.  The creativity and pace of the Yellows against a much smaller younger looking  Paulton was a treat to watch for any biased spectator and for the opening 20 minutes or so Paulton were forced to defend deep and repel the barrage which was coming from all angles. Mentionable moments of the early part of the game saw Tom Tricker’s thunderous strike come off the upright and A flying Steve Sutton narrowly miss with his head after receiving a delightful cross into the box from Tias Morgan.

The Yellows took their foot off the pedal for a period allowing Paulton to play the ball around, but resolute defending from James Skinner & Luke Turner saw off the dangers. Tivvy upped the tempo again around the 30 minute mark and started to launch more penetrative attacks on the Paulton goal and it was in the 35th minute that the deserved break though happened when Tom Tricker started the Tricker roadshow, a sweet strike from range sailed by the keeper to make it 1 – 0, a shell shocked Paulton defence were beaten again by the tenacity of Tricker less than 2 minutes later when he made it two with another great finish. Paulton looked to be rocking and with 40 minutes gone a rash challenge in the box saw Tivvy awarded a penalty which Tricker stepped up to take and convert to give him his hat-trick which was completed in a little over 5 minutes of play.  Tivvy were unrelenting in their thirst to score and continued right up to push forward until the whistle for the end of the 1st half.

The second half looked to be a damage limitation exercise for Paulton and they seemed to stifle the Yellows play to a degree with a more resilient style during the opening 15 minutes of the 2nd period which at times boiled over into frustration for both sides with yellow cards being issued to both sets of players, but things settled down and both sides got back to playing some great football  with Paulton’s  keeper having to make some tremendous saves to keep the Yellows at bay, before break away move around the 80 minute mark  saw Paulton flood Tivvys box  forcing in a deflected shot pulling a goal back to  make a very exciting last 10 or so minutes which was end to end stuff with Tivvy  having to defend well before substitute ben Lyne put the game beyond any doubt in the 90th minute with a scrappy but all important goal.

A great game of football by both sets of lads and all the best to Paulton for the rest of the season.

Tivvy will now meet Wells City in the next round @ Ladysmead on Thursday 22nd September 7.30PM kick off.
Goal Scorers: Tom Tricker (3), Ben Lyne

Teignmouth 1 - 3 Tiverton Town

The beginning of a new season and under new managment Tivertons young yellows travelled to Teignmouth for what was to become a fiesty season opener. Straight from the first whistle the football was fast and free flowing if not a bit rusty, Teignmouth having the first opportunity to test defence and keeper, however a combination of Luke Turner and Dan Law managed to clear the lines and launch Tivvy on a counter attack with Adam Macmartin shooting just wide.

The Teignmouth keeper seemed to have a game plan of his own and launched the ball as far into the Tivvy half as he could, however Kieron Love was more than equal to the task of controlling and moving the ball into the midfield wher Tom one and Tom two passed the ball between them and got the ball out wide only for the Teignmouth number 8 to hammer the ball back at the Tivvy goal where Dan Law was stranded but a quick thinking Tyler Grigg managed to clear for a Teignmouth throw in.

Tiverton win the ball back with some neat work by the hard working Jake Searle whose shot at goal is only just wide of the mark. Teignmouth take the resulting goal kick but the ball goes as far as Tom one who passes the ball to Adam Macmartin who beats the defender and on his left foot slots the ball past the keeper for the first of the season GOAL Tivvy one nil.

Teignmouth attack Tivvy with a vengence and a quick thinking Dan Grant headers the ball off the Tivvy goal line, out to a waiting Rich Edworthy who passes to Adz who in turn lets the ball go for a frantic smash from Tom one (Tricker) GOAL Tivvy two nil. The ball now goes back and forward until Tyler Grigg headers the ball at goal only to hit the bar but Tom one is there to follow up and smash the ball into the back of the net GOAL Tivvy three nil and half time.

Teignmouth resart and manage to get past Kieron love and shoot at the Tivvy goal but a superb instinctive save from Dan Law prevents Teignmouth scoring, Dan is then caught out of goal but for Tiverton lady luck shines down and Teigmouth hit the post half time.

At the start of the second half Tivvy see the introduction of James Youlden and Jake Richards, Teignmouth appear to have the early run of play causing the Tivvy defence all sorts of trouble, the game slowly settles down with both sides having opportunities with Tivvys Tom one missing an open goal. Tiverton win a corner,  the ball is cleared by Teignmouth as far as Rich Edworthy who plays a neat one two with James youlden who shoots at goal only to be denied by a fine save from the Teignmouth keeper.

Finally Teignmouth get a break, a mix up among the Tivvy defence allowing them to score a very undeserved goal Tivvy three one. The game is now entering its final stages and Ben Lyne who was a constant thorn in the Teignmouth defence has a one on one with the keeper, Teignmouth manage to clear their lines, the game now is almost over as Jake Searle wins a free kick, as the resulting kick comes to nothing the referee blows time.

A thanks to Lester and Mike for stepping in to run the team, and a thanks to the Tivvy supporters who travelled to watch an entertaining if not predictable rusty start to the season, but non the less a deserved win for Tivvys young yellows.

Tiverton goals, Tom Tricker 2  Adam Macmartin 1
